When a Navajo woman reaches the age of matured and receives her first menstrual, she starts her ceremonial journey, mimicking Asdzáá Nádleehé, Changing Woman (a Navajo Goddess or Deity). The purpose of the ceremony, and mimic, is for the young woman to obtain the characteristics and attributes of Asdzáá Nádleehé. Asdzáá Nádleehé is the definition of a Navajo woman.
The Navajo woman is the keeper of the home and children. She does not rely on help from others, she is very independent. She provides her family with healing and protection. She is the teacher, the guide, the leader and because of a Navajo women's way of life, she brings balance to her home and to her children.
This brand aspires to reclaim the Diné, (Navajo), & to motivate others to practice the traditions by practicing the acts of the matured women. Occasionally there will be a hint of the modern. The goal for each piece is to symbolize Diné women. Her strength, pride, beauty, & culture is the inspiration. Crafted by the descendents of Asdzáá Nadleehi, she will remain traditional & forgiving. It will have the simplicity of the classics, & dazzling of the Diné.
Sáanii Yázhí is a blend of homegrown ideas, wisdom, strength, resilience, & healing from the hands of generations of Naakaii Dine'é, (Wandering People Clan), women. Sáanii Yázhí is unlike other brands. With every stitch, every weave, every creation, there is a prayer & positive thought to it. Every piece resembles the morning offering, blessing you. Blessing you with strength, guidance, protection, added to your day to carry out properly. Sáanii Yázhí aspires to bless you with beauty, all around, by adding to your individual style with pieces of tradition.
Sáanii Yázhí means little old lady in Diné bizaad (Navajo language). Shimásaní, my grandma, calls my sister and I little old ladies. She refers to us as, saanii yazhi, because of the way we are as young women. We carry ourselves with much maturity. As much maturity as the older women in our culture. My sister and I also practice the acts of the very matured women. I take that as a compliment!
So, are you also a Sáanii Yázhí?
Here is shimásaní, Mary Joe Becenti, Master Weaver from Shiprock, NM. I remember my mom telling me that shimásaní use to make her own clothes & she would sew her name tags onto each piece. It was very inspiring. Now, here I am sewing my brand name onto my pieces!
